From a Financial Times article about the South Ossetia / Georgia escalation
“Georgia warned on Friday that Moscow and Tbilisi would be in ”a state of war” if reports of Russian tanks, military trucks and troops entering South Ossetia proved true.
”If it’s true that Russian troops and armaments have been sent to Georgia, it means that we are in a state of war with Russia,” Alexander Lomaia, secretary of Georgia’s National Security Council, told AFP.”
What does Georgia, really, gain by stating that they are at war with Russia? Do they expect the world to come to their rescue? NATO?
There are so many layers to this conflict. Even after months of interest in the region I don’t fully understand it. Particularly I do not understand Why Russia wants to extend its sphere of influence to include South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Some months ago Russia offered Russian citizenship/passport to a large % of the Abkhazian population. Why? So that when something “goes wrong”, Russia can call in the troops, saying they are going to “Protect Russian citizens?” By “going wrong” I mean for instance some men in Georgian military uniforms starting attacking a village, or doing other acts of violence.
I will now look for some English-languaged blogs that focus on this conflict.
Great posts as of late. Please blog more about your perspectives on Georgia. I find them very insightful.
btw, that word “destiny” is a scary term indeed… I can not imagine receiving such a fanatical comment from someone I know… disturbing, quixotic I think is the term, and I think it very important personally to understand where this split or leap of logic or illogic happens. I see it, but I don’t get it and can’t even imagine it. It’s fantasizing. It’s very hard to understand the indifference, acceptance, or especially the rush to what will bring nothing but violence and death to many innocent people.
Re: Alexander Lomaia statments
In the U.S. if a political leader made such a dangerous statement the outcry in the press would surely end him politically… and yet our own politics is equally dangerous in it’s subtlety and deceit… i.e. water-boarding = “advanced interrogation techniques”, weapons of mass distruction, terrorists links… tangled webs and deception.
BTW, still using co.mments.com… very happy with it. Haven’t found anything better.
ALso, just made a bunch of twitters about my thoughts on stepping away from the whole “social media” thing and regaining some perspective. I think they would have made a better blog post, but twitter is much more accessible sometimes. No need to overthink it, or overanalyze it, it’s just thinking 130 chars or so at a time.
Hope we get a chance to chat soon. Hopefully even tomorrow. I’ll keep an eye out for you online.
