Rainforest Action Network and social media
After a lengthy hiatus from things related to social media after I came back from Georgia (much more on the Georgia trip soon), I talked with my friend and videoblogger extraordinaire Jay Dedman today and he pointed me to the latest video produced by Ryan is Hungry
I find this to be a very good introduction to the kinds of stories that RAN wants to share. The challenges, something about the opposition they get (the CEO talking to the press after the RAN intrusion was interesting), and what kind of effects their work has.
RAN uses several different new media tools: Facebook, Flickr, and Youtube. It will be interesting to see how they use these different new media tools together with the blog to pull visitors deeper into the issues, informing and engaging us.
Next year the COP 15 will take place in Copenhagen, and I am increasingly interested in how stakeholders from Denmark and across the world can communicate about the issues among ourselves and towards the delegates at that meeting before, during, and after that conference.
Ryan Is Hungry is an excellent site for becoming inspired from what people are doing. Are there other similar videoblogs out there, interviewing NGOs active in “the green field”?

I miss our dltq-versations, lost the link to your secrete vlog, I’m still looking for it, may find it yet, but just in case can you email or private message it to me on twitter?
btw, still using co.mments.com to track comments… been doing some wordpress research… it’s getting sooo good… been reading up on their comment tracking and gravatars… also open ID is getting us there. I still long for more transparent and service independant ecosytems…. to be able to participate in a conversation across the web with my friends wether it be on youtube, flickr, twitter, blogs or wherever. Overexposed… hardly… I look at my own twitterings, blogging, link blogging and flickr posts, and I look at yours and I think… there is still not enough transparency the converations I know we’re both participating in.
Part of it is summer… always so many distractions… am offline to much… must find better ways to make better use of smaller amounts of time online… more non-linear ways to connect with people who may also be online less…
have a todo list of things to blog about… how messed up is that?
Michael: What secrete vlog?
Non-linear communication is an artform that many of us are losing. When was the last time you sat down and wrote a really long, winding e-mail to someone? That led to a non-linear conversation through a thread? An exchange which opened your eyes to new opportunities.
I think in IM and twitter we are losing more than we are gaining. Sure, the real-time element is good for a quick exchange, discussing ideas, agreeing on a time and place to meet. But – what kinds of comnversations would real-time Not work for?
Take care, Michael. Thanks for you comments!
You know… I miss writting really long winded emails.
On an unrelated note…
I’m thinking I need to go camping…overnight bike tour maybe tomorrow…. could be home monday. Hmm…
I just picked up an MSR dragonfly http://www.msrgear.com/stoves/dragonfly.asp blacklite cooking kit and utensils for $20 bucks at a garage sale, and it’s reminded me of how much I love camping and how long it’s been since I’ve been.
sorry, about the non-linearness… lol… I came home, had a beer and crashed… just woke back up… well.. if I was awake.
