November 7th 20:53

Posted by raymond on November 07, 2007

Could be any November 7th, could be any night at 20:53. 54.

We are approaching the end of the political campaign here in Denmark. National elections is on Tuesday.

I just made this for navlopomo

I have a lot to say about political videoblogging. This will suffice for now:

In Denmark, most parties “are on youtube” this election. But, what does that mean? What does it mean to post talking head videos on youtube, where the politician is just talking to the camera? That has even Less interaction with a critical journalist than main-stream media. Is this what youtube offers politicians? The opportunity to talk to the camera for 5 minutes without critical questions? The faux-openness and “oh, please do send us your comments”?

I will write and say a lot more about this the coming days here on dltq.org

    Of course, it means nothing.
It can only go two ways - no response/effect; or lampooning by video response and comments from haterz. Either way, they’ll give up. It’s a token effort, not meant to achieve anything - just undertaken by people who are either cynical or naive.
And until the masses are able to access independent videos and will watch people presenting their case in a personal, low production value manner, then we’re stuck.
The only other way is to organize. Make your voice heard, like you were saying. It’s too late for your own election right now - but important for democracy elsewhere. We have this amazing tool, which tells stories and opinions so effectively and powerfully - it needs a louder voice.
Both in political and artistic/creative arenas.
But organizing takes time, money and effort. And so there needs to be someone fronting any organisation who is articulate and persuasive. Boring, to bring it back to personalities, but that seems to be the way it is. Even for Unions and Associations and Charities.

We’ll have parliament elections on 25th and parties are on YouTube, but not as talking heads, rather as videos from promo meetings. Which I think is better. Or less worse.
